Definition: A paradox resulting from the special theory of relativity; if one of a pair of twins remains on earth while the other twin makes a journey to a distant star at close to the speed of light and subsequently returns to earth, the twins will have aged differently. The twin remaining on earth will have aged considerably more than the twin who travelled to a star. The paradox arises by considering the situation from the travelling twin’s frame of reference. To that twin, the earth-bound sibling is the one travelling and should age more slowly.Expl. The paradox is resolved by realizing that the situation is not entirely symmetrical and the comparison with the travelling twin being in an inertial reference frame does not hold. When the twin has to turn around to come back, he must slow down and decelerate and then speed up again making his reference frame non-inertial.
